Corrosion of steel in soil is an electrochemical process. It acts as a galvanic cell in a similar way to a battery producing an electric current. This current can be measured on the surface of a member as an electric field and compared with an electrode at a standard potential, which is the half cell in the system.

We were requested by our client Uretek, to assist them in identifying the buried utility services and areas of roadway that contained voiding beneath the surface on a site in Bath on the main A363 Road. This particular site was a busy main road and the sheer volume of vehicles was causing a lot of damage to the road surface and below.
